Joshua Community Centre, Petrosani

The Joshua Community Centre in Petrosani has been set up by the Herepeia Foundation to help disadvantaged children of the area, whilst recognizing the need to help and support the whole family.

The centre is run by a dedicated and committed Romanian team of paid staff and volunteers.  It gives a much needed focus for the local community, in one of the poorest areas of Petrosani, which is beset with many problems stemming from poverty and social exclusion.

The centre opened on April 15th 2002 and is open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 6.00pm, and on Saturday mornings.

The basic programme at the Joshua includes:

  • Homework Club.

  • Clubs for the elderly.

  • English Classes for young people and adults.

  • Teenage craft activities.

  • First Aid training.

  • Eye Testing and health screening.
  • Kindergarten.
  • Summer Club for children.
  • Local community events, such as carols at Christmas.

  • Social work outreach.

In 2007 the Herepeia Foundation was able to secure placement of a Peace Corps volunteer, Karla,  from America.  She has been invaluable in the planning of existing activities, as well as implementing new ones, such as the English classes.
